Decorated Shade

(2010)

The billboard is a ubiquitous figure in the built environment. More than 450,000 billboards are currently maintained in the US, which annually generate about 10,000 tons of billboard fabric waste. It is not economically feasible to recycle the PVC-polyester composite fabric, so the vast majority of the waste is sent to landfills.

Stemming from a need for a large but inexpensive window covering, the Decorated Shade is assembled from repurposed billboard vinyl fabric. Overall design of the piece responded to available color blocks from a single billboard, and design continued throughout the making process as specific swatches were chosen. The semi-translucent material insulates drafty windows while producing a spatial effect that varies with natural light conditions, keeping inhabitants aware of the time of day and weather conditions.
